Symphysodon, colloquially known as discus, is a genus of cichlids native to the Amazon River basin in South America. Due to their distinctive shape and bright colours, Discus are popular as freshwater aquarium fish. The sides of the fish are frequently patterned in shades of green, red, brown, and blue. Discus typically reach up to 12.3–15.2 cm in length.

They primarily feed on algae, other plant material and detritus (periphyton), but also take invertebrates. Their basic requirements are a larger aquarium (90cm+ is recommended) and stable, clean water. Ensure the aquarium has been chemically tested and it is within the parameters listed above. Discus are susceptible to rapid changes in water quality.
